Epiphany Accelerated its Third Cohort Under Epiphany Lab, this time, Virtually.
Islamabad – 20 July, 2020 – Epiphany, a catalyst for impact entrepreneurship, accelerated its third cohort under Epiphany Lab, an international, time-tested impact accelerator program from April to July 2020. This year, Epiphany Lab had to embrace a new normal and design all of its activities for the virtual world. Epiphany’s team conducted live real-time video sessions, weekly office hours and one-on-one mentoring sessions as part of the program. Epiphany also became the first to execute a virtual Demo Day which brought together startups, mentors, academics, government officials, investors and entrepreneurship support organisations from Pakistan, USA, UK, Singapore, Hungary and UAE.
After a 4-month long virtual bootcamp, Epiphany Lab hosted it’s Demo Day on the 11th of July. The main goal of Epiphany Lab 2020’s Demo Day was to showcase the hardwork and talent that is present in Pakistan, the sleepless nights that go into starting a business, developing an MVP, refining the business model and the enthusiasm that our Little Epiphanies have to change the world!
Samar Hasan, CEO of Epiphany stated, “The hard work, energy and resilience demonstrated by these ventures has been inspiring. The generous support from our community of mentors, advisors and team members has been equally inspiring. We look forward to tracking the progress of our #littleepiphanies over the coming months and helping them prepare for business development, expansion and investment raising.”
The four graduating startups of Epiphany Lab 2020, MachineSells, AlphaBrain, FaktorIn and Kamayi were the finalists from a large pool of candidates. They are addressing SDGs 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, 10 and have businesses on sustainable machine-use, AI in healthcare, access to finance for SMEs and on matching the right employers with the right employees, respectively.
These startups engaged with international and local mentors and received guidance on conducting customer research, rapid prototyping, refining their business models, budgeting and financial planning, pitching and story-telling and developing an impactful marketing strategy.
Asad Ehmed, Epiphany’s Chief Strategy Officer and Micro VC said: “Developing a business requires hard work and strong determination. Moreover, the most important thing is to develop a thick skin and respond with agility to challenges that will come from time to time, and this journey has just begun for our third graduating cohort. We hope with Epiphany’s support, these startups will become impactful and sustainable businesses.”
We were honoured to have Saleem Ranjha, Director Akhuwat and Shandana Gulzar Khan, Member National Assembly as our keynote speakers for the Demo Day. Mr. Ranjha narrated the inspirational story of Akhuwat. Shandana Gulzar Khan provided an open space for the startups to raise their concerns and offered to support them.
The Demo Day also featured a panel discussion featuring startup founders who have successfully raised investment. We had startup founders, Naureen Hyat from Tez Financial Services, Faizan Aslam from Bookme.pk and Ali Moeen Malik from Roamer.
Startups pitched in front of 5 judges, Nicolas Huras, Chairman Digital Innovation Committee IMAS; Nariman Qureshi, the Head of Talent and Development, South Asia at the British Council; Dr. Ayesha Khan, the CEO & Country Head of Pakistan at Acumen; Badar Khushnood, Co-founder of Bramerz and Fishry.com and Bilal Ahmed Khan, Senior Manager Analytics Consulting at Teradata.
The winning team announced by the judges was Kamayi which provides an end-to-end recruitment solution tailored to SMEs’ hiring needs at an affordable price. Kamayi aims to ensure the right match for employers and job seekers through the simplest process possible.
Salman Shahid, CEO of Kamayi stated “ During our time with Epiphany Lab, our team learned how to conduct structured problem research, how to improve on governance structures, how to develop fast and cost-effective go-to-market strategies, growth hacks for user onboarding and offered best practices in investor relations and management skills. Team Kamayi is definitely better off having gone through the program and I would recommend it to early-stage startups looking to grow and grow fast!”
