Snapthat Technologies has built a visual search engine for fashion clothing that can assist customers in finding various designs and items similar to an image they upload. The co-founder, Muhammad Haris bin Naeem, shares his views about the crisis and discusses the company’s sustainability challenges amidst the crisis.
How has the current COVID situation affected your business?
All our business development activities have come to a halt. As our business is focused around the e-commerce fashion industry in Pakistan and mostly in the European region, we even lost one of our high volume deals which was our biggest source of revenue.
What are you doing to keep your operations up and running during these times?
We have established processes for all our team to work remotely and have restructured the team. We have cut down all our costs to the minimum. We don’t know for certain if we can sustain our employees for the next quarter or not.
Which tools are you using to stay productive and for keeping in touch with your team?
We are using Slack, Zoom, Trello, GitLab and WhatsApp as tools to effectively communicate and help us as a team stay productive.
What are you doing to stay positive?
We are gathering information on the decisions international organizations and communities are taking to contain the pandemic. Also, we are analyzing different datasets to figure out how we can build up on them to contribute something to contain it for our people in Pakistan. As Technologists, we know how networking affects work and that exponential growth curves usually decline fast, that gives us hope that things will soon become better.
This crisis has shown us that the world will be different once we move past this situation. How will you pivot and what would you do differently in a post-Corona world?
Yes, we think the world is going to be a lot more different in terms of our trajectory as human beings and species on this planet. We hope that together we all will learn and will work our way towards a more democratic and environment- friendly world as a whole.
We have already made our decision to pivot our business and half of our team has already started working on it. In a post Corona world we will probably strive towards creating distributed economic opportunities for people from different backgrounds.
